you can apply for an N.I. number (N.I.N.O.) at anytime just go to the jobcentre and they will put you on the phone to someone who will arrange it for you. They may do it all over the phone or you may have to go in and see the person face to face but it is all very straight forward and it is a forgone conclusion that you will come away with a N.I.N.O.
You can apply at any time.
If you have payslips, did you suffer PAYE or NI deductions?
If so, what happened to these? You employer can’t remit them to HMRC without a NINO for you, so has he retained them?
When you get a NINO contact HMRC and check the position on your tax.
