    I doubt you could get insurance for that! Try setting up a savings account instead. A few quid a month that you wont miss.

    Sorry to tell you this but you cannot get insurance based on the life of another (unless there is ‘insurable interest’, ie the relationship between a husband and wife where there is a financial dependency on each other).

    In cold hard terms if your parents die and you are an adult it wouldn’t affect your future finances since you are not dependent on them, so you cannot insure them.

    What they could do is take out life insurance on themselves and leave you as the beneficiary, but it would take a few days to come through once they die so it wouldn’t really solve your problem.

    What you could try is talking with an airline now about your concerns and offering to pay them for a ticket now that you could use at any future date at short notice providing that seats were available.

    I have never heard of airlines offering special rates for family members that were not in the armed forces

    No. It’s called a savings account. Most major airlines (in the US anyway) do have discounts for grievers who need to fly out on an emergency. You might still be better off haggling a price online.

    The closest type of insurance related to your question is a travel policy that includes repatriation of the deceased’s remains (if they were traveling outside of NZ). It would not cover related persons visiting the deceased, however.

    On the bright side (though still admittedly morbid), this may be the perfect impetus to start saving more. A good habit like that is hard to break.
