The guy who wrote it off takes it home or sells it, if it still works.

There are specialist salvage companies that buy in bulk from the insurance companies. These items are then catagorised and sold on to repair companies / ebay etc

Its usuallly sold by the salvage company.

Years ago my car was written off.
The insurance company paid me the value and the garage kept it.
Months latter i saw my car own driven by someone on the same road I live.
They bought it off from the garage.( what happens is that the garage tells the insurance company that it will cost to repair the car than the value of it………this way they keep the car as it was in good nick)
    what a scam.

Quite often they leave them with the original owner to dispose of because they are not worth anything. Just ask
